Cinematic Sandstorm

In this course we’re going to tackle simulations, rendering & compositing. Check out the full process involved in creating cinematic shots with Houdini, Solaris & Nuke!

About the course

Vellum

We’re going to simulate the cape flowing in the wind using Vellum. Learn how to control source geometry to better suit the simulation.

Ripple

Using the ripple solver we can fake wind blowing along the shirt. With this method we can very easily achieve fine details in wrinkles.

Pyro & Dust

The sandstorm is simulated using a very simple Pyro setup. Using only a few microsolvers we can achieve complex movement.

Using this pyro simulation we can now push particles that become the dust layer.

Solaris

After we have all FX we can assemble the shot in solaris. Here we also create some custom materials, do a quick lighting setup and separate all render layers with each respective AOVs.

Nuke

In the comp section we’ll bring all our renders together. We’ll go over best practices and some of my favorite nodes and workflows that I use on a daily basis.

Downloads

This download contains the Houdini and Nuke project files. You can also grab the renders from the link provided in the zip archive!
