What's the course about?
Learn how to take full artistic control of RBD simulations in Houdini using VEX and procedural workflows. Rather than relying on randomness, you’ll direct destruction to hit specific creative and cinematic beats.
You’ll create a rock golem that erupts from the ground, assembles itself from fractured debris, follows animation, and interacts with a sci-fi energy shield.
Along the way, you’ll develop production-ready workflows for secondary debris, dust, smoke, and large-scale destruction effects. The techniques covered are designed to be flexible, scalable, and applicable to real-world VFX projects.
What skills can I learn?
RBD Specialist
Most RBD artists can create destruction. The artists who stand out are the ones who can shape and direct simulations to match a creative vision.Â
You’ll develop a deeper understanding of how rigid body simulations behave, how to control them with VEX, and how to build systems that remain flexible throughout production.Â
By the end of the course, you’ll have a practical framework for tackling creature destruction, environmental destruction, and large-scale FX work.
Instead of fighting simulations, you’ll learn how to guide them toward the exact result you want.
While the primary focus of this course is RBD simulation and destruction, you’ll also learn how these effects integrate into a modern production pipeline. The project is developed through Solaris, giving you practical experience with scene assembly, lighting, rendering, and USD-based workflows.
To bring the final shot to completion, you’ll explore look development techniques and finish the project in Nuke. This end-to-end approach provides valuable insight into the entire FX process, from simulation and rendering through to final compositing.
