• What's the workshop about?
Anime FX in Houdini & Nuke is a deep dive into creating stylized, anime-inspired visual effects using industry-standard tools.
This course is built from years of experimentation, exploration, and production knowledge. The goal is to push 3D renderings as close as possible to a hand-drawn anime look, while still working within powerful 3D and compositing pipelines.
Although anime is the main inspiration, the techniques taught here apply broadly to stylized and non-photorealistic rendering across many visual styles.
• What skills can I learn?
Throughout the course, you’ll learn why Houdini and Nuke are such a powerful combination for stylized FX work.
Houdini gives us unmatched flexibility when it comes to building and shaping effects, while Nuke allows us to completely redefine the final look through advanced compositing.
Instead of locking visual decisions into shaders and renders, we’ll use render passes and post-processing to gain speed, control, and creative freedom. This workflow allows you to iterate faster, experiment more, and push visuals far beyond what’s practical directly in 3D.
A major focus of the course is understanding how stylized looks are constructed. Not just copying a recipe, but learning the logic behind them.
You’ll explore how to rebuild materials, lighting, and shading inside Nuke using AOVs, masks, and compositing techniques, taking advantage of its deep toolset and decades of development.
While the course primarily uses Nuke, all concepts are transferable, and you’ll also learn where newer tools like Houdini’s COPs (Copernicus) shine, especially when creating procedural FX directly from scratch.
